What is a "compassionate conservative?"

This article is so fascinating!!! It is so the story of liberals vs conservatives and dives into why we think the way we do. I have set up this blog, partly, in an attempt to understand my neighbors and friends...and it was not a fruitful attempt...I have heard the logic...but do not understand the depth. Very interesting read. I will include it in the articles to the right as well. Click HERE.

  1. You can totally tell this was written by a liberal. :) This is not AT ALL how I think, even though I am a conservative. Let me tell you...

    1. Guns. The right to bare arms is in the constitution. Sure it is to protect but also to hunt and enjoy gun sporting (like skeet shooting, etc.)
    2. I am religious because I love God.
    3. I am not at all hostile towards immigrants or other people that are not my race. I am not. I do however, think that they should follow the process that is set in place to live in this country. I think they should make the process less complicated, but nevertheless, it should be followed.
    4. Of course we need a good military. Not because I am scared or feel threatened, but because things happen...like war...and 911 and we need to be prepared and ready to stand up for ourselves.
    5. I think people should be able to live good lives without the government getting involved. They don't need to tell me what to teach my kids, what to eat, and how to live. I don't need to be micromanaged. And as far as taxes...who LIKES to pay taxes? So much money in taxes? Of course we should pay SOME taxes...but why so much?
    6. I am pro family because I love my family. I believe that what families do in their home, they do outside their home. Families are central to God's plan.
    7. I am not apposed to welfare, however I think that welfare should be helping people help themselves. And the program we've got going on right now seems to be helping people stay on welfare. That being said, I see that people need help and I do my best to help those I know are suffering. Community is a great resource for helping those in need.
    8. I only admire wealth when people use it to do good. Wealth is nothing compared to the non material joys in the world. Like family, God, and serving others. But just simply being rich means nothing to me.

I can't speak for all conservatives, but these are my thoughts on this article.

    1. Good for you Michelle. And obviously there were some things that did not pertain to myself...I am religious...well, maybe that is the only one. But in the MANY conversations I have had on gun control it always comes down to this as the argument for the type of guns that aren't even necessary for hunting. (I have to point out...Obama is not for gun control...and I am not anti-hunting...well, I hate hunting...but others can do that. It is more about gun control on the weapons like the assault rifle used in the Aurora shootings. Anywho...the arguments for this ALWAYS come back to the following: 1. "I want to be able to protect my family if we have an intruder." 2. "I want to be able to protect my family in the last days."
As far as immigrants: 1. "Most bring drugs and violence into our country and we need to be harsh to keep them out." 2. "I have no problem with racial profiling."
And welfare...even though many programs have limits and many welfare recipients are retired couples, retired veterans, kids getting pell grants, etc....there is still this generalization: 1. "I had to earn my own money"--says the white boy whose parents bought him his first house.
      2. "They need to work harder and be responsible."
So even though all of these points might not match you Michelle...and of course they don't!! I still relate to it...bc I have talked to hundreds of people about these issues and most Republicans end up at the same arguments I described above. I thought it was a fascinating article. We are all complex individuals...so as soon as we are labeled we change...but it is thought provoking, I thought.
